What Is Hair Transplantation And How Is It Done?

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that involves transferring hair follicles from a donor area (usually the back or sides of the scalp where hair is abundant) to a bald or thinning area of the scalp. The goal is to restore hair growth in the balding areas and create a more natural-looking hairline.

There are two main techniques used in hair transplantation: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

FUT involves removing a strip of scalp from the donor area and dissecting it into individual follicular units. These units are then transplanted into the recipient area using tiny incisions made with a needle or blade.

FUE, on the other hand, involves removing individual hair follicles directly from the scalp using a specialized punch tool. The follicles are then transplanted into the recipient area using the same method as FUT.

The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia, and patients may be given sedatives to help them relax. The length of the procedure depends on the extent of the transplantation, and can take anywhere from several hours to a full day.

After the procedure, patients will experience some degree of swelling, redness, and scabbing in the recipient area. The transplanted hair will initially fall out within a few weeks, but new hair growth should begin within a few months. Full results may take up to a year to become apparent.

Hair transplantation can be a very effective way to restore hair growth in balding areas of the scalp. However, it is important to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon to perform the procedure and to carefully consider the potential risks and benefits before deciding to undergo the procedure.
